[00:05] The American Civil War, which took place from April 12, 1861, to May 26, 1865, was a conflict between the Union (the North) and the Confederacy (the South).
[00:21] The main cause of the war was the dispute over whether slavery should be allowed to expand into Western territories.
[00:41] Abraham Lincoln's victory in the 1860 presidential election, due to his opposition to slavery's expansion, led seven southern slave states to secede and form the Confederacy.
[00:59] The war began on April 12, 1861, when the Confederacy attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina.
[01:15] Led by President Jefferson Davis, the Confederacy controlled a significant portion of the US population and territory.
[01:30] After four years of intense fighting, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865, effectively ending the war.
[01:38] President Lincoln was assassinated on April 14, 1865, shortly after the Union's victory.
[01:44] The war resulted in the destruction of much of the South's infrastructure, the collapse of the Confederacy, the abolition of slavery, and the freeing of millions of enslaved Black people.
[01:52] The nation then entered the Reconstruction Era to rebuild the country, reintegrate the former Confederate states, and grant civil rights to freed slaves.
[02:12] Abraham Lincoln, the 16th US president, was known for his determination to preserve the Union and his opposition to slavery.
[02:36] Jefferson Davis served as the President of the Confederate States of America from 1861 to 1865.
[02:53] Robert E. Lee was a prominent Confederate general who commanded the Army of Northern Virginia.
[03:08] Ulysses S. Grant was the Union Army's Commanding General and later became the 18th US president.
[03:36] William Tecumseh Sherman was a Union general known for his "total war" strategy, including the destructive "March to the Sea."
[03:52] Philip Sheridan was a Union general whose tactics in the Shenandoah Valley weakened the Confederacy.
